HBT: Ex-player Pastore in coma after wreck

Frank Pastore, who spent seven of his eight major league seasons with the Reds from 1979-86, is in a coma after after being injured in a car accident Monday night.

?I just hope everyone is praying for him. This is a shock to all of us,? Pastore?s mother-in-law told the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. ??He?s a very good person. A Christian person. At this time, it?s very hard. He?s loved by everyone.?

Pastore was driving a motorcycle when he was struck by a car. According to California Highway Patrol Sgt. Aaron Knarr, the driver of the car lost control and hit Pastore?s Honda Shadow in the car pool lane. The driver of the car wasn?t hurt and was not intoxicated.

Pastore, 55, hosts a radio show on a Christian station based in Los Angeles. He went 48-58 with a 4.29 ERA in 139 starts and 81 relief appearances in his major league career, which concluded with the Twins in 1986. He had his best season in 1980, going 13-7 with a 3.27 ERA in 27 starts for Cincinnati.

NEW YORK (AP) ? One Direction's "Take Me Home" is the taking the boys to the top of the charts ? and to new heights.

The group's sophomore album has sold 540,000 in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. It's the year's third-highest debut behind Taylor Swift's "Red," which sold 1.2 million units its first week earlier this month, and Mumford & Sons' "Babel," which sold more than 600,000 albums in September in its debut week.

"We just want to say a massive thanks to all the fans who have supported us," band member Harry Styles, 18, said in an interview Tuesday from London. "We can send tweets and thank them, but 140 characters is never going be enough to say how much it means."

The album also debuted at No. 1 in the United Kingdom this week and is No. 1 in more than 30 countries, Columbia Records said Wednesday. The fivesome's debut, "Up All Night," came in at No. 2 in the United Kingdom last year; it was just released in March in America, where it hit No. 1 and has achieved platinum status.

"We were a little bit nervous about how people were going to take it," 19-year-old Niall Horan said of the new album during tour rehearsals. "Everyone gets that second album syndrome."

They say though they're excited, they won't be celebrating too much: "We're finishing rehearsing soon and we're going home to bed."

One Direction, who placed third on the U.K. version of "The X Factor" in 2010, is signed to Simon Cowell's Syco label imprint. In just a year, the band has become worldwide sensations, thanks to its feverish fans. They released a book and have a 3D movie planned. They also made the cut for Barbara Walters' most fascinating people of 2012 list, which includes New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and U.S. gold medalist Gabby Douglas.

One Direction says those experiences have helped the group mature.

"We've been working hard. We're starting to grow up," Horan said. "We're still young, but we've passed the initial teenage years. ...We've grown up quite quick in the job we have to do and we became a lot more independent."

The group ? which includes Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson ? will launch a worldwide tour in February. They hope to work with Katy Perry and are still trying to adjust to the celebrity and fame that has taken over their lives.

"I can see how it gets to people. I guess it's quite easy to get wrapped up in it all," Styles said. "We do the same things every other lad our age does. We go out, we have fun, we meet girls and stuff like that. Sometimes it gets written about, which, yeah, we think about it and it's absolutely crazy. It's still a bit weird thinking that that's the way it is."

6 Ways Couples Can Connect During the Holidays | World of ...

Even though the holidays are about loved ones, they somehow don?t leave much time for couples to connect. Between added responsibilities and family obligations, it might seem like you?re spending less and less time together. Or maybe quantity isn?t the issue, but quality time is.

?It is very important for couples to remember that although they are integral parts of their extended families, and for couples with children, integral parts of creating rituals and memories for their children, they also ? first and foremost ? have a?commitment?to each other,? said Nikki Massey-Hastings, PsyD, a clinical psychologist who works with couples.

But while connecting might be tricky, it?s absolutely possible. Here are six ideas for reducing stress and staying connected during the bustling holiday season.

1. Be selective.

Talk to your partner about the events you?ll attend. ?Decide where you will go for which holiday, and alternate the choices every year,? said Mudita Rastogi, Ph.D, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Arlington Heights, Ill. Being selective with your holiday plans minimizes stress and lets you enjoy the events you do attend, she said. ?

2. Be fair.

When making plans, don?t shoot down your partner?s ideas. As Rastogi said, ?If hubby insists on spending the whole weekend with Grandpa Henry, try to understand why.?

And brainstorm a variety of solutions. For instance, she said, you might drive separately to an event.

3. Have special traditions.

You probably have a number of traditions with your extended family, Massey-Hastings said. For instance, you might eat your holiday meal at the same place every year or have a specific way of opening presents, she said. And if you have kids, you might take them to the same holiday attractions, she said.

Traditions that involve the two of you are just as important. These rituals help to bolster your bond, Massey-Hastings said. And they protect against potential stressors that might come up from spending time with your extended family ? for instance, your traditions might include selecting a new ornament every year or enjoying a special holiday date.

4. Sneak in together time.

Cook an interesting meal together, go to the movies or use your time in the car to catch up, Rastogi said. Even if you?re at someone else?s home for the holidays or hosting loved ones, carve out some alone time.

For instance, go to your room 30 minutes before you need to sleep, wake up 30 minutes before you need to start getting ready, go for a walk or run errands together, Massey-Hastings said. If you have kids, this time without mom and dad helps them bond with their other relatives, she said.

5. Get creative together.

?Create a collage of pictures for your annual holiday letter, bust out your favorite playlist and practice your dance moves for the holiday party, or write your own song with your sweetie,? Rastogi said. It?s also a great way to relieve stress, she said.

6. Make time for intimate moments.

It?s important to connect with your partner in all areas of your relationship, and that includes sexual intimacy, Massey-Hastings said. You might try different locations ? like a bathroom or private backyard under a blanket ? positions or activities, she said. Or you might just try being ?quiet in a house full of loved ones.?

Connecting during the holidays might be a challenge, but with a little bit of planning and effort, you can have fun as a couple and nourish your bond.

She says?it?s the sign of the times - buyers are cautious about not over-extending themselves and are prepared to sit it out and wait for better times.?However, when properties do come on the market and are priced right, they change hands fairly quickly, she says.?

?There is no doubt that homes that are pitched at market related prices get a far better response.?When this is coupled with perceived value, properties are usually sold within eight weeks.?

She says they?ve had buyers vying for the same property but the downside is that those who refuse to listen to the market will have to wait a lot longer to sell.?

Demand has improved, aided by lower interest rates and an increased uptick in bond approvals.?Prospective buyers are taking the precaution of consulting with their bankers as to whether they qualify for a bond and are succeeding in getting pre-approvals prior to putting in offers.??

Other buyers are purchasing after they have sold their previous home and therefore know in advance what they have available to spend. There are also those who diligently set aside monies for the deposit, eliminating the necessity of applying for a 100 percent bond. By the same token, many buyers pay cash after the sale of a previous home.

Iran's Khamenei says U.S. and Israel seek to divide Muslims

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran's most powerful authority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Thursday accused the United States and Israel of fomenting divisions among Muslims to undermine "Islamic uprisings" across the Middle East.

"By exploiting inattention ... corrupt American, NATO and Zionist agents are trying to divert the deluge-like movement of Muslim youth and bring them into confrontation with one another in the name of Islam," he said in an annual message to Iranians who have gone to Saudi Arabia for the haj pilgrimage.

"They are trying to turn the jihad against colonialism and Zionism into blind terrorism in the streets ... so that Muslims shed each other's blood."

Officials in Shi'ite Muslim Iran often describe the "Arab Spring" uprisings as an "Islamic Awakening".

Some of those uprisings have brought Islamists to power, while others, notably in Syria and Bahrain, have pitted Sunnis against Shi'ites or Alawites, members of an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Iran has aligned itself with its regional ally Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Lebanon's Shi'ite Hezbollah movement in what it calls an "axis of resistance" against Israel. At the same time it denies accusations from Sunni-ruled Gulf monarchies that it is encouraging Shi'ite uprisings in their countries.

"The aggressive and interventionist arrogant powers are making every effort to divert the course of these significant Islamic movements," Khamenei said, according to Iranian state television, urging Muslims to show solidarity.

He reiterated Iran's opposition to outside intervention in Syria, saying only Syrians could decide their own future, and said other unspecified nations could also be engulfed by Syria's turmoil.

On Wednesday, international mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said both the Syrian government and most opposition groups had agreed to the principle of a ceasefire during the three-day Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which starts on Friday.

Feds investigate phony letters warning Florida voters they're not eligible to vote

Florida voters receive letters saying their citizenship is being challenged, along with their eligibility to vote. WBBH's Dave Elias reports.

The FBI and U.S. Postal Service agents are investigating bogus official-looking letters sent to voters in at least 28 Florida counties questioning their citizenship and their eligibility to vote, ?NBC News has learned.

David Couvertier, a spokesman for the FBI in Tampa, said his office opened up an investigation into the possible attempt at voter intimidation on Wednesday after receiving reports that eligible voters throughout the state have received the letters.?

"We're taking it as a serious situation," he said. "We're looking at everything from civil rights violations to election fraud -- to everything in between."

Chris Cate, a spokesman for the Florida Secretary of State's Office, told NBC News, "We believe these? letters appear to meet the standard of voter intimidation." Between 50 and 100 such letters have been reported to state officials so far, "and those are only the ones we know about. We're encouraging people to come forward."

The fake letters, which first started showing up last Friday, have been sent under the names of real Florida county election supervisors -- with some correct contact information -- informing the voters that the supervisors have received "information" about their citizenship status, "bringing into doubt your eligibility as a registered voter."

The letters also say the voter must fill out a Voter Eligibility Form in the next 15 days -- and failure to do so will result "in the removal of your name from the voter registration rolls and you will no longer be eligible to vote."

"A non-registered voter who casts a vote in the state of Florida may be subject to arrest, imprisonment, and/or other criminal sanctions," the letters state.

In the key battleground state of Florida, divergent opinions separate voters with just over two weeks until the election.

Some of the letters have been received by "longtime, staunch voters who have been exercising their right to vote" for years, Couvertier said. While those people are likely to vote anyway, "Our concern is someone who might not be secure and then questions whether they should vote."

It's not clear who sent the letters, which were machine postmarked in Seattle. Couvertier said the FBI in Tampa is working with its Seattle office to track down the perpetrator.

Cate said a "significant majority have gone to Republican voters, but not exclusively. We've got Democrats who received the letters, we've got independents. We're telling everybody to be on the lookout."
