Stuck way in the back of the chapel, I was waiting for my friend Tor to receive her pin in a special ceremony for the nursing graduates of Regis College. A woman began to play the piano as the audience settled in. From my vantage point, it looked as if the statue of Jesus was directing the musician. ?I knew Tor wouldn?t have a chance to see this but that she?d appreciate it very much. The lighting wasn?t the best so when I got home, I played around with some filters in Adobe photoshop to pull out as much detail as I could and to brighten up the statue for this simple digital scrapbooking page. I ended up using the cross hatch filter and playing with some blend modes.

I invite you to take a poorly lit photo and see if you can salvage it by creating an artistic version. Don?t forget to do a ?save as? step to retain your original.

Choosing Childcare | Early Years Sign Factory

Sharing the care of your child is a very big step. Research studies have consistently found that the early years of life are critical to the emotional, physical ,social and intellectual development of a child. Therefore choosing a suitable type of childcare can be a daunting experience, particularly for first time parents.CanavanByrne with SafeHands are the adjudicators of the Maternity and Infant Cr?che of the Year Award. They explain ?75% of brain growth happens in the early years and therefore the quality of the early learning environment can impact on a child?s quality of life, their development and their future. Play has a huge role in developing children?s skills and laying the foundation for happy and competent adults?

Parents in Ireland have a wide variety of options available to them. The type of childcare arrangement you choose will obviously depend on your needs and what is available in your community. Working parents may require all-day care to facilitate their working hours. Families where one parent works at home may choose a pre-school setting for three hours daily. Whatever option you choose it should be convenient, affordable and most importantly provide a quality experience for both child and parent. The term commonly used to describe this sector is Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) which indicates that a ?child?s? care and general welfare is intertwined with learning and development?

?

Type of Service

The Cr?che or Nursery may provide care from children from 3 months upwards. This? type of facility is generally open long hours to suit the working parents and can combine a range of options for parents including full-time, part-time and afterschool care. Cr?ches and nurseries usually offer a planned pre-school learning programme within the day.

The Pre-School/Playgroup usually operates for approximately 3 ? 3.5 hours per day for children from 2.5 ? 6 years. It offers a planned play and learning environment. Some pre-schools follow a specific curriculum approach such as Montessori, High/Scope and Steiner. A pre-school that uses Irish as a medium is known as a na?onra.

A childminder is someone who offers childcare in their own home. They provide a home-from-home environment. Some childminders offer a wrap-a-round service i.e drop-off or collection from school.

An au pair is employed as a live-in nanny? and can look after children of any age.

?

Regulations

In Ireland Cr?ches, Nurseries and pre-schools are regulated by the Childcare Pre-school Services Regulations 2006 .This means that services are open to annual? inspections by the HSE. ??These regulations also cover Childminders who care for more than three children. Au pairs, nannies, school-age childcare and childminders who care for three children or less are not regulated.

?

Top Tips for Choosing Childcare

CanavanByrne and SafeHands provide the following tips in choosing childcare:.

  • Do your research: Your local city and county childcare committee is an excellent source of information on services in your area. Also ask your friends and colleagues for recommendations
  • Do an initial telephone interview: Find out the basics about the service first ? age range catered for, opening hours, curriculum, activities, staff qualifications, food & nutrition etc
  • Visit the Service: A visit to the service is an excellent way to assess if your child?s needs will be met. Prepare a list of questions in advance. You should expect a warm welcome, a tour, an explanation of the fees, an introduction to the main policies (eg, behaviour management, illness, hygiene, healthy eating, TV usage, security, accident prevention), an introduction to the curriculum and an overview of the daily routine.

?

Recognising a Quality Service

A good quality service will supply you with lots of information without even asking.

Quality childcare service

The Environment

According to our adjudicators good quality services will have a spacious and well equipped indoor and outdoor space with an emphasis on child safety. There should be evidence of children?s creative work throughout the building. Is artwork displayed at eye level? ?The environment should provide opportunities for all types of play from messy art to quiet activities.

?

Interactions

Positive interactions between staff and the children is undoubtedly one of the most crucial factors. There should be warm and inviting atmosphere. Are children relaxed and happy?

?

Curriculum

Good services will provide a broad range of activities, planned according to needs of individual children. There should be a good combination of child led and adult chosen activities. Parents should watch out to see if the Aistear themes are being used in the services they visit. Aistear (meaning journey) was introduced as a National Early Childhood Curriculum Framework in 2009. It describes learning and development as four interconnecting themes ? Well-being, Identity & Belonging, Communicating and Exploring & Thinking. According to our adjudicators high quality services will support children?s learning across these themes.

?

Parental Involvement

Another hallmark of quality is a service that works in partnership with parents. What arrangements are in place to share information with you? How can you become involved in your child?s learning?? Does the service respect your child?s likes/dislikes? Does the service want to find out as much information as possible about you and your child. Remember a true partnership involved the childcare practitioner, the parent and the child.

?

Staff Training

You should expect that the staff caring for your child is skilled and competent. They should have a minimum of a Fetac Level 5 qualification and be encouraged to continue their professional development. Staff should also be trained in manual handling, first aid and child protection. They should be Garda vetted and have references. Don?t be afraid to ask for evidence of qualifications and training. .

?

Funding Support for Parents

Funding for childcare, funding for parents childcare

The good news for parents is that all children are now are entitled to one year free pre-school in the year ?prior to entering primary school. This initiative, funded by the government makes early education accessible to all children. Interested parents should talk to their local childcare service about this or contact the local childcare committee. Families on social welfare or low incomes may also be eligible for subvention which is a subsidised place. These part-funded places cover all age ranges and are only available in community (not-for-profit) centres at the moment. If you are attending a VEC or FAS scheme you may be eligible for? CETS ? this is? a Childcare Employment and Training Support Scheme providing free childcare places for trainees.

?

Raising the Bar

Childcare Standards

Most pre-school services are subject to HSE inspections. CanavanByrne and SafeHands recommend to service providers to display the HSE inspection reports so that parents can access them and ask questions if necessary. These reports list the areas of compliance and non-compliance in areas such as staff/ child ratios, health safety and hygiene, the programme of activities and food and nutrition. Many services work very hard to go beyond the statutory requirements of the inspectors and engage in quality assurance programmes. Such programmes are run by the national voluntary agencies that represent nurseries, cr?ches, preschools and childminders including the National Children?s Nurseries Association, the Irish Pre-schools Association and Childminding Ireland.

?

Finally??

The choice is yours!? As a parent you should choose the type of care most suited to your needs. There are advantages associated with all types of care.? Some parents may choose a group care setting such as a nursery or cr?che for the enhanced? opportunities to interact with other children or to avail of a purpose built space. Others may choose a childminder for the intimate care that can be provided in a small home-from-home setting. An au pair or live ?in nanny may be the solution for a family requiring high levels of flexibility and convenience. Whatever type of care you choose it is wise to do your homework first!

PFT: Big post-Peyton ticket slump for Colts

Carolina Panthers Training CampGetty Images

Last week, Panthers linebacker Jon Beason took issue with comments from 49ers quarterback Alex Smith regarding the big stats from 2011 generated by Carolina quarterback Cam Newton.

On Tuesday, Beason had more to say during an appearance on SiriusXM?s Mad Dog Radio.

By way of background, here?s what Smith originally said:? ?I could absolutely care less on yards per game.? I think that is a totally overblown stat because if you?re losing games in the second half, guess what, you?re like the Carolina Panthers and you?re going no-huddle the entire second half. Yeah, Cam Newton threw for a lot of 300-yard games.? That?s great.? You?re not winning, though.?

Here?s what Beason said on Tuesday:? ?When you read the comments it seemed like he used the Carolina Panthers as a way to take the pressure off himself, in the meantime taking a shot at us.? Based on what he said I think couldn?t be any further from the truth, actually what happened this season.?

There?s more.? ?I think [Cam Newton] is way ahead of Alex was as a former first-round pick,? Beason told Evan Cohen and Steve Phillips.? ?You know, going into a situation where you?re on the worst team in football, or in an offense that finished 32nd in scoring last year, to an offense that finished fifth, I think you should at least take your hat off to him and understand the situation and the type of pressure that Cam Newton was under this year.?

The bottom line is that, while the 49ers went to the NFC title game, the Panthers offense generated big passing numbers last year, and the 49ers didn?t.

?I think 19 touchdown passes is, you know, not going to get you in a Super Bowl,? Beason said.? ?I think five interceptions is an amazing stat, but it is just like in basketball, if you don?t shoot you can?t score.? So based on what they were able to do and the parts around him, the coach, the defense, I think they did a great job.? You win 13 games you?re the best in the league.? I think that?s the right formula for them but that wouldn?t have been the right formula for us.? So do you take your hat off to Alex Smith?? Yes.? Should he feel good about himself?? Yes.? Should he get upset about having to answer questions about him finishing 29th in the league in yards per game?? That?s a stat.? If you don?t like it maybe fix it but, like I said, in the meantime don?t take shots at other people or other players because you are tired of dealing with that question.?

Beason?s ultimate point is valid.? In defending his relatively bad stats, there?s no reason to knock down those who had better stats.? Newton had the best rookie season of any quarterback to ever play the game.? Regardless of the team?s won-loss record, that?s a fact.

For 49ers fans, it could actually be a good sign that Smith is starting to display a bit of a chip on his shoulder.? And he definitely should have one after the team openly flirted with Peyton Manning before giving Smith yet another chance to prove that he can finally become the guy the organization thought he would be when making him the first overall pick in 2005.

Whether that shoulder-chip generates a better stat line for Smith will be one of the more relevant questions of the 2012 season.

Mars Opportunity rover sees its own shadow in crater

The?Opportunity rover?was perched at the western edge of Mars' Endeavour Crater when it captured the image. Endeavour is about 14 miles (22 kilometers) wide, and Opportunity has been exploring the many outcrops along its rim since August 2011.

The photo is a mosaic composed of images taken with Opportunity's panoramic camera between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Mars time, mostly on March 9, NASA officials said. The scene is presented in false color to highlight differences in materials, such as the dark dunes on Endeavour's floor.

Opportunity just started moving?again two weeks ago, after spending more than four months at a site along Endeavour's rim called Greeley Haven. The rover sat out the harsh Martian winter at the site, whose tilt allowed Opportunity to angle its solar panels toward the low-hanging sun.

While Opportunity was motionless for a long stretch, it was not hibernating. The robot continued to investigate nearby rocks at Greeley Haven, and scientists analyzed radio signals from the stationary rover to study Mars' interior.

Opportunity and its twin, Spirit, landed on Mars in January 2004. The six-wheeled, golf-cart-size rovers were originally tasked with three-month missions to look for signs of past water activity on Mars.

Both robots delivered from their separate landing sites, finding lots of evidence that the Red Planet was once a much wetter, warmer place. And then they just kept going, far beyond their warranties.

Spirit went silent in March 2010 after failing to get into a good position to wait out the Martian winter, and the rover teamdeclared the Mars rover dead?last year. But Opportunity is still going strong, continuing to add to the 21.4 miles (34.4 km) it has driven to date on the Martian surface.

Opportunity will soon have company on the Red Planet. NASA's newest Mars rover, the 1-ton Curiosity, is slated to land on the night of Aug. 5. The car-size Curiosity's main goal is to assess whether its landing site is, or ever was, capable of supporting microbial life.

SYRIA: The international community condemns massacre of Hula

SYRIA: The international community condemns massacre Hula
?????? AFP ? Convictions multiplied Saturday after the massacre in Houla, where UN observers have counted a hundred deaths, including over 32 children, the Secretary General of the UN accusing Damascus to violate international law and its commitments.

????

Kuwait: call for arming the rebels after the massacre of Syrian Hula

Hundreds of Kuwaitis, including MPs, protested Saturday in front of the Syrian Embassy to denounce the massacre of Hula, Syria, and seek weapons of Free Syrian Army (SLA).

The Islamist MP Jamaan al-Harbash urged Arab Gulf States and Turkey to intervene to protect civilians in Syria and warned that if governments could not act, ?they should open the door to the peoples of the fight.?

Falah al-Sawwagh, another Islamist parliamentarian, called for sending arms to the ASL and called the Kuwaitis to exert pressure on their government to provide greater assistance to the Syrian people.

Paris, London and Berlin have also denounced the killings, but noted the call by the Syrian Army free (ASL), composed mostly deserters, to conduct ?air raids? against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

The opposition accused the authority to have committed the massacre that would have done, according to Syrian Observatory of Human Rights (OSDH), 114 dead, including 32 children.

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Kofi Annan?s envoy condemned ?in strongest terms the death, confirmed by the UN observers, dozens of men, women and children ?at Hula, in central Syria, said Martin Nesirky, spokesperson for Mr. Ban.

?This terrible and revolting crime, in which force was used indiscriminate and disproportionate, is a flagrant violation of international law and commitments made by the Syrian government to cease its use of heavy weapons in cities and violence whatsoever, ?still felt MM. Ban and Annan, adding that ?the perpetrators of these crimes must be tried.?

Damascus, General Robert Mood, Chief Observer, also condemned ?the brutal tragedy? and said that the observers had counted over 92 dead, including 32 children under 10 years, adding that teams were pursuing the count on site.

The opposition has attributed the massacre to the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, while the official SANA news agency accused of ?armed terrorist groups? to have ?burned and blew up houses Friday night (? ) to believe that the Syrian armed forces bombed the area. ?

According to the OSDH

, the bombing began Friday afternoon on the outskirts of Houla and continued until Saturday at dawn.

General Mood has not appointed officials, but stressed that ?observers have confirmed (?) the use of artillery fired from tanks.?

ASL is mainly composed of soldiers who deserted with their arms, while the army tanks are still deployed in cities in violation of the Annan plan intended to end the violence.

Warning against a ?civil war?, General Mood has called on the government ?to stop using heavy weapons? and ?stop resorting to violence?, also urged ?the opposition to s? refrain from using violence ?to achieve a? political solution ?.

? The Annan Plan will go to hell ?

Meanwhile, ASL no longer felt bound by its commitment to the Annan plan, six weeks after agreeing to a cease-fire under the plan, technically entered into force April 12 but been consistently ignored.

?Unless the Security Council of the UN to take urgent decisions to protect civilians, the Annan plan will go to hell,? said the ASL.

Previously, General Mustapha al-Sheikh, head of the Military Council of the ASL, called ?urgently friendly countries from Syria to form a military alliance outside the Security Council of the UN, to conduct targeted air strikes against gangs of Assad. ?

the approach of Mr. Annan?s visit to Syria planned for earlier this week, the condemnations of the massacre of Houla have multiplied.

Berlin said he was ?horrified and shocked?, while Paris has condemned the ?atrocities? inflicted on the Syrians.

?I take immediate contacts to meet in Paris the Group of Friends of the Syrian people,? announced the French Foreign Minister, Laurent Fabius.

His British counterpart, William Hague, called for ?a strong international response? and announced his intention to seek an emergency meeting of the Security Council of the UN ?in the coming days.?

Meanwhile, the Gulf Cooperation Council has ?condemned the massacre in Houla by Syrian regular forces? calling the ?international community to shoulder its responsibilities to put an end to the bloodshed in Syria.?

United Arab Emirates for their part, asked for an urgent meeting of the Arab League while in Kuwait, several hundred demonstrators gathered outside the Syrian Embassy to demand the arming ASL.

Elsewhere in Syria, the violence is Saturday 20 dead, including five soldiers, according to OSDH, which has reported numerous protests over the killing of Hula.

According to the OSDH

, more than 12,600 people have died since the beginning of the revolt against the regime, mostly civilians killed by government forces.

Moreover, the fate of 13 kidnapped Lebanese Shiite pilgrims in Syria on May 22 was uncertain when Beirut was announced Friday they were released and were in Turkey.

Dr. Denton Weiss on Death and Dying: Pride and Fear or Love and ...

PORTSMOUTH,VA. (Catholic Online) ? Dear Dr Denton: Recently I lost a loved one and I am having a tough time dealing with the loss. Can you help?

Pride and Fear or Love and Faith.

On Good Friday I walked into a church without kneelers and said to my Lord ?Please Jesus bring the kneelers back into this beautiful basilica?. Mass was starting and I was dressed to the nines. I had my suit and all the fittings in place. I was sitting asking God what am I doing with my life. I had just lost a friend after a surgery and was emotionally spent. The cause of his death was not clear and the Lenten season had been the worst of my life culminating in the loss of life.

As I sat in a state of quiet we all began to rise slowly and move forward to the cross. Initially they came out with three crosses. ?What is this? I thought ? ?there is only one cross for Christ not three?. Once again critical, angry, and simply questioning God. As we moved forward I waited and then stepped out to walk down the aisle. In front of me was a small, African American man bent and weathered with the burdens of time. He shuffled as I walked proudly. Then suddenly I realized he was wearing sweat pants and his gait was one of pain and agony. He knelt in front of me shaking as he touched the cross, he offered a kiss.

I cried, realizing he was Christ before me. I the Proud physician was struck to his knees. I could only hug the cross below the site where this beautiful man kissed the wood of life. I cried at my sin of Pride and asked forgiveness.

I made it back to the pew and held on for whatever would come next. My brother-in law by my side. We prayed for our wives who were home with their failing father. I prayed for answers to the questions running through my mind. Why was my father-in-law weakening? Why did my friend die? Why did my patient suddenly pass from this would to the next? Why Lord?

Now Fear began to overcome me as I thought of the future. What would happen to my patient?s family, our family, the practice, and my patients? Please Lord! Like the voice of my father when I was a child, like the voice of The Father in the reconciliation. Like the voice of the Rabbi. ?My Grace is Sufficient for You? Exploded in my head. ?But, Lord? ?My Grace is Sufficient for you.? I cried.

Faith

As we moved to the Lords Table exhaustion really is the only word I can use to describe the moment. I lifted my head and received the Body and Blood. I knew I was given the ultimate gift, the gift of Love.

When I returned to the pew I found out why there were no kneelers. There was no need for them. The floor of stone was worn smooth by the knees of the faithful upon them. As I knelt there on the floor the presence of Our Lord filled my Soul with Faith and Love.?

With the?weeks of Easter now?upon me I reflect back on Lent and losses of loved ones, now and in the past. I look at the life changing moments of crisis and I see the answers are in Faith and Love. My responses are simply human.? Elisabeth Kubler-Ross wrote the acclaimed book ?On Death and Dying? and tried to give us all some sense of healing after the loss of a loved one. She and her colleagues studied the coping mechanisms of individuals who had lost loved ones. They came up with 5 stages that are now commonly used in helping people through healing and recovery.

Ms Kubler-Ross has been quoted as saying ?The five stages.are a part of the framework that makes up our learning to live with the one we lost. They are tools to help us frame and identify what we may be feeling. But they are not stops on some linear timeline in grief. Not everyone goes through all of them or in a prescribed order. Our hope is that with these stages comes the knowledge of grief?s terrain, making us better equipped to cope with life and loss.?

These thoughts are reinforced by George A. Bonanno, Professor of Clinical Psychology at Columbia University, in his book ?The Other Side of Sadness.? In his writings Professor Bonanno describes grief as highly individualized and personal, that no two people grieve in the same way.The Stages of Grief, as they are called, should probably be called The Healing Stages

Denial:? Initially many of us close out the event as if it never happened we function as though the world hasn?t changed.? The feeling of being numb is common or even a sense of shock leaving a person speechless and fatigued. Pain, sadness, and especially guilt can creep into the heart. Why not me?

Anger:? The most difficult of stages to manage because denial is gone. Someone or something is to blame for this pain I feel. The very people who are supporting us are often the ones we strike. Sometimes we strike at God. We yell in our minds ?why Lord why, you could have stopped this from ?

From Canada Down To Argentina, The Oil Flows

As the wind whips across the scrub grass in southern Argentina, a crane unloads huge bags of artificial sand for oil workers preparing for the hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, of a well.

Water mixed with chemicals and tiny ceramic beads are then blasted underground at high pressure. This mixture helps create fissures, allowing oil and natural gas to flow.

Energy analysts believe there are billions of barrels of oil and gas buried in a desert-like patch in Patagonia.

In many places in the Americas, oil discoveries are being made and production is rising. In the U.S., for example, the same kind of technology has permitted oil companies in North Dakota to ramp up production to nearly half a million barrels a day.

The growing production in the Americas is changing the world's energy equation, with the U.S. now less dependent on Persian Gulf oil.

German Perez oversees a team of technicians from Schlumberger, the Houston-based oil services giant that's drilling in southern Argentina.

Perez says the day could come when thousands of wells pockmark the land above Vaca Muerta, the huge energy-rich formation here.

"Yes, yes," he says, "I think that's what's going to happen. The projections are very positive."

A Trend Throughout The Americas

The projections are positive up and down the Americas.

Production is rising fast in Canada, Colombia, Brazil and in the United States, which increased output by 1.7 million barrels in just six years.

RoseAnne Franco of the energy consulting firm Wood Mackenzie has been closely tracking the rise in production.

She says there's a twofold reason for the rise: high oil prices and technologies such as fracking that are unlocking the potential for hard-to-reach oil and gas.

"You are seeing that in North America, but you are also seeing that in Latin America," she says. "So areas that are more difficult to produce, such as heavy oil in Venezuela, the pre-salt in Brazil, it's now more economical."

Oil companies are also drilling in the Arctic Circle, in the heart of the Amazon, off the Falkland Islands and in the waters off French Guiana.

This new scenario comes as exports to the United States from all but one major OPEC country have fallen in recent years.

More than half of all U.S. imports now come from countries in the Americas, while just 22 percent comes from the Persian Gulf.

That doesn't mean that the oil and gas in the Americas will be easy to produce ? or that countries with large, undeveloped fields will be able to get them online fast.

Argentine Policies Raise Concerns

In Argentina, some oil analysts consider the government's populist policies an obstacle to development.

Crowds recently celebrated on the streets after Congress unanimously approved the expropriation of the country's biggest energy firm, YPF, from its Spanish owners.

That has spooked other oil companies.

Their concern wasn't lost on Ruben Etcheverry. He's among the regional energy officials in Patagonia who are trying to assure oil companies that they're welcome and needed to develop potentially lucrative formations.

"What we need is more technology and investors," he says. "And I think that we have not convinced but talked with them, and they have understood that it would be for them a good activity, a good business, also to establish here."

Some major oil companies are already in Argentina, among them ExxonMobil. American companies better known for their fracking technology are here, too, such as Apache and EOG Resources.

One of the veterans of many an oil exploratory well is Juan Carlos Montiel of YPF, the Spanish firm that was recently nationalized by Argentina.

Wearing a hard hat and steel-capped boots, he walks amid roaring pumps as they rev up to drill.

He talks excitedly about the 1,200-horsepower pumps that blast water and how the operation relies on huge water containers, hose lines and computerized equipment. With this exploration that's taking place, he says, Argentina will greatly increase its production of gas and oil.

Pivotal role for proteins -- from helping turn carbs into energy to causing devastating disease

Pivotal role for proteins -- from helping turn carbs into energy to causing devastating disease

Friday, May 25, 2012

Research into how carbohydrates are converted into energy has led to a surprising discovery with implications for the treatment of a perplexing and potentially fatal neuromuscular disorder and possibly even cancer and heart disease.

Until this study, the cause of this neuromuscular disorder was unknown. But after obtaining DNA from three families with members who have the disorder, a team led by University of Utah scientists Jared Rutter, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry and Carl Thummel, Ph.D., professor of human genetics, sequenced two genes and identified two mutations that cause this devastating disease.

"The ability to convert carbohydrates into energy is critical for people and other organisms to live. But when that process goes awry, potentially fatal health problems can occur," Rutter says. "If we can figure out a way to correct the defects, we might be able to treat the disease."

Rutter and Thummel are senior authors on a study published online in Science Express on Thursday, May 24, 2012.

The researchers studied two proteins, Mpc1 and Mpc2, which are among a dozen proteins they looked at in fruit flies, yeast, and then humans. They discovered that the two proteins play a pivotal role in the cellular process that produces the majority of ATP, a molecule that is the main source of energy for cells and is essential for people and other animals to live. Rutter and his colleagues also discovered that when Mpc1 and Mpc2 are impaired they cause the deadly and as of yet unnamed neuromuscular disorder. This disorder affects thousands of people worldwide.

To produce ATP, the body metabolizes carbohydrates and converts them into pyruvate, which then typically enters into the mitochondria in cells. Once inside the mitochondria?a self-contained unit often referred to as a cellular power plant?pyruvate is consumed in the production of ATP. Rutter and his fellow researchers discovered that Mpc1 and Mpc2 are critical for pyruvate entry into mitochondria. When Mpc1 and Mpc2 are eliminated or mutated, pyruvate cannot enter into mitochondria and ATP is not efficiently produced ? and that's when serious health problems can arise, including the neuromuscular disorder that in its most severe forms is deadly.

The ramifications of this study go beyond the production of ATP and birth defects seen in the neuromuscular disorder. The findings may be useful in understanding some of the metabolic defects associated with cancer and heart disease, according to Rutter. Cancer cells typically don't consume their pyruvate in the production of ATP at the same rate as normal cells. Instead, they convert the pyruvate to lactate. This property of cancer cells is called the Warburg Effect and is named after Nobel laureate and cancer researcher Otto Heinrich Warburg. Some forms of heart disease have a similar problem.

Further study based on the current research may provide important information regarding those diseases, according to Rutter. "That might be the most important outcome of our studies in the long run," he says.

The study's first author is Daniel K. Bricker, a doctoral student in human genetics at the University of Utah. Researchers from Harvard University, and the Laboratoire de Biochimie and the Institut de Genetique et de Biologie Moleculaire et Cellulaire, both in France, also contributed to the study.

Tell me about life in Alberta! - Straight Dope Message Board

Calgary here too. I'm not sure what the demand is like for technical writers, but if you can find a role in O&G you can make a decent living.

phreesh answered most of your questions pretty well, but I'll just add a few data points:

We own a three bedroom bungalow in an older neighborhood technically considered 'inner city' (barely) that we purchased for $455,000. It takes me about 20 - 25 minutes to drive downtown/home during rush hour, which I never do, because it costs me $35 a day to park across the street from work. The cheapest parking lot I can find within a kilometer of work is $17.

I either take transit or bike to and from work 95% of the time. I live within walking distance of the LRT and it costs me about $2.75 each way (or you can buy a monthly pass for much cheaper). Door to door is 45 minutes if I walk to the train (about 1 km). If I drive to the train, that cuts about 15 minutes off the trip. I almost never get a seat on the train during rush hour.

Biking to work involves roads and bike or multi-use pathways. They are maintained very well and are generally cleared before the main roads in the winter, oddly enough. Most companies provide free or very low cost bike parking (mine is even undergroud/inside).

Downtown becomes a ghost town in the evening/weekends generally, but the city is working to change that. We do have some good culture/music stuff, such as Shakespeare in the Park, outdoor concerts, really good free-ish performances/live acts during Stampede in July, and we do get some good shows. As mentioned, we generally get passed over for some of the larger concerts, mostly because our stadium can't host their productions/stages (though Edmonton can).

We have a pretty good recycling program in place, and for the most part, the city is clean. We have lots of parks and green spaces, and a comprehensive pathway network through the city. Our infrastructure is lacking and hasn't kept up with our population growth, so driving can be frusterating.

The best thing about Calgary is access to the mountains. If you're an outdoorsy person, Calgary is the better choice between us and Edmonton. However, we are a city of immigrants and wealthy cowboys who don't care about maintaining the 'Calgarian' identity. While I personally don't notice it, some say people here are rude.

I love Nenshi and think he's making good changes in our city. I personally hope he gets re-elected for another term, but the older generation doesn't really like him. His win was a product of his fantastic social networking and subsequent ability to get young voters out.

Fort McMurray is a place where you live to work. That's it. There is no housing, and the housing you can find costs upwards of a quarter of a million. Those that work up there generally live in camps or shared housing. You do not live in Fort Mac because you like it up there (unless you are from there - then I guess you might feel tied to the area).

Leadership - Marketing and Advertising | Assist My Business - Social ...

The success of a business organization fundamentally depends on the quality of leadership that it has. Competent leaders will always ensure that an organization is ever on the right success path by developing and implementing accurate policies that help to propel the business to greater heights. So then, what are the qualities of outstanding leadership and who exactly fits the bill of excellent leaders who oversee the operations of the business corporations? This is one question that the owners or proprietors of such business will often ask themselves before setting out on a quest to recruit the brilliant minds to head their business. Well, psychologists will tell you that great leaders are born, while international business schools will undoubtedly tell you that leadership skills and qualities are taught and acquired! How true this is depends on your levels of judgment or precisely, a previous hand on experience with various people who have occupied managerial roles.

One thing that is for sure is that an exceptional leader is a combination of quite a number of factors, both natural and academic qualities. People might refer to phenomenal business leaders like the late Steve Jobs and Bill Gates as personalities whose academic record is not as flashy as, say the Chief Executive Officer of Research In Motion (RIM), Thorsten Heins. They may have dropped out of college at some point, but that did not hinder them from marching on to exploit their full potential. Perhaps in such instances, exceptions can be taken. Bill Gates and Steve jobs are sure iconic personalities who are role models of many in the techno-world we all live in today. However, it is particularly essential to note that these two iconic figures are not necessarily the practical managers of their particular corporations. Obviously, they have appointed personalities with exceptional managerial skills who have helped to shape Apple and Microsoft corporations respectively.

Other than efficient leadership, marketing strategies play an integral role in elevating a business organization to success. There are numerous marketing strategies, but none has certainly had tremendous impacts like the social media. Indeed, the innovation of computer technology and the subsequent invention of the internet have helped businesses to achieve their maximum potential. The internet has allowed creative minds to develop online platforms that offer various marketing and advertising tools. The social networks are such perfect examples of social media. Social networks like Facebook and twitter offer advertisement features in which the businesses can use to market their products and services. With the vast number of followers these social networks command from all over the world, it becomes even easier to reach an international audience who may in turn be potential clients or customers.

A vast majority of international business organizations have all utilized the use of social media to expand the accessibility of their products and services. Of these companies, technology and telecommunication firms stand out as the biggest users of social media, maybe because they are related any way! Good examples include; Sun Micro Systems, IBM, Ford and Dell among many others. When appropriately used, marketing and advertising using social media significantly reduces advertising costs, thereby increasing the profitability of these business organizations.
