Ghana ruling party endorses president as election candidate

Ghana's ruling party on Thursday overwhelmingly endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as its candidate for December polls, in a display of unity for a party that has shown signs of division.

The National Democratic Congress meeting came in the wake of president John Atta Mills' death in July, five months ahead of polls in which he was to seek re-election. Mahama, previously vice president, was sworn in to finish his term.

Mahama received 2,767 of the 2781 ballots cast, party officials said. The president, who spoke before the voting, pledged to further unite the party which has rallied behind him following Mills' death.

"The death of president Mills was unfortunate, but it has opened new doors of opportunities for the party to work hard towards the overall development of the country," said Mahama, wearing a shirt with Mills' picture in tribute.

"I know there are disagreements within the party since we assumed power in 2008, but I pledged to ensure that there is unity in the party.

"I promise that the December elections will be peaceful for Ghana to continue to be the beacon of hope and democracy for Africa. As supporters of the party, I plead with you to be very vigilant during the elections but not to be violent."

The party has been somewhat divided in recent years, and Mills had been challenged by ex-president Jerry Rawlings' wife for its nomination in a primary last year, though he eventually won easily.

Rawlings stirred controversy in Ghana in the days after Mills' death when he told a radio programme the late president had been suffering from cancer and could only work a few hours a day.

Rawlings, who had been at odds with Mills in recent years despite Mills' previously serving as his vice president, spoke to Thursday's congress in support of Mahama.

"Your success will depend on how quickly you restore integrity into the presidency, government and the ruling party," said Rawlings.

"I call on supporters home and abroad to join the campaign trail. You should not sit on the fence and expect to be appointed as government officials."

Mills died on July 24 at age 68. No official cause has been given, but there have been unconfirmed reports that he suffered from throat cancer.

The NDC delegates gathered for the congress at a stadium in Kumasi in south-central Ghana, traditionally a stronghold of the opposition but where the NDC is seeking to make inroads.

They began voting on the party's endorsement in the afternoon amid a lively atmosphere, with music playing and crowds gathered outside the stadium. Mahama was the only candidate.

The transition since Mills' death has gone smoothly, with Mahama sworn in hours afterward to serve out the remainder of the late leader's term, as dictated by the west African nation's constitution.

However, Mills's death upended the presidential race in a country that recently became a significant oil producer and is praised as a stable democracy in an often turbulent region.

Analysts say the election is likely to be close. Mills won the 2008 vote with less than a one percent margin.

Where Are They Now?: Crowbar

Got a nagging injury you want to fix? A bad back? Stiff knees? If you?re in the market for a physical therapist, look no further than the pipe-wielding wildman of WCW, Crowbar.

While that may not sound like the best advertisement for a therapist, the former WCW Hardcore and Cruiserweight Champion, whose real name is Christopher Ford, has dedicated years of his life to the craft, working with several hospitals in northern New Jersey before branching out and opening his own practice.

And he did it all while competing in the ring, bouncing around between WCW, ECW and WWE before finding a stable spot in Ted Turner?s Atlanta-based organization in 1999. But the story of how Ford got there, and what he?s done since leaving WCW in 2001 is stunning. (CLASSIC PHOTOS | CURRENT PHOTOS?| VIDEO PLAYLIST)

Ford?s love of wrestling began at childhood. A major fan of superheroes and comic books, the Rutherford, N.J., native was originally drawn to larger-than-life characters like Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior. But as he got older and was drawn more to the craft of wrestling, Superstars like Randy Savage and Ric Flair began to mesmerize him.

By the time he hit high school, wrestling became an extreme passion for Ford and he began to consider stepping in the squared circle.

?It was getting to where being a fan wasn?t enough,? he told WWE.com.

During his sophomore year of high school, Crowbar found out that former WWE Superstar ?Iron? Mike Sharpe was going to open a wrestling school in Brick Township, N.J., about 90 minutes from home. That was all he needed to hear to make up his mind. He spent the summer working as a bus boy in a banquet hall, eventually saving up enough to begin training at Sharpe?s school.

Ford was ?Iron? Mike?s first student at the Jersey Shore academy. He quickly learned that there wasn?t much of a difference between Sharpe, the man he had seen on television, and Sharpe, the teacher.

?What you saw of him on TV was how he trained you,? Ford explained. ?He would put on his black tights and boots, tape up his wrists and actually oil up to train. He would be explaining the moves and all that, but he was working out himself, too.?

And if you?re wondering, Sharpe did occasionally wear his trademark leather armband, his student said.

Sharpe?s quirkiness didn?t end in the ring, though, as he?s long been rumored to be one of the ?neatest? grapplers ever ??a fact which Ford laughed about when asked about his teacher?s penchant for organization, before confirming it was true.

?His bag was immaculate,? he said. ?If you opened it up, it was a series of Ziploc bags. It was almost like those Russian egg dolls. You would open one bag that would go into a smaller one that would go into a smaller one.?

After studying under Sharpe for nine months, Ford hit the independent scene on the east coast in early 1992. Taking the name ?Dangerous? Devon Storm, he barnstormed throughout New York and New Jersey, wowing crowds with talent like Ace Darling, who later became his tag team partner in WCW. The bleach blond grappler adapted an aerial style he learned from Bill DeMott. Devon Storm?s high-flying ability caught the attention of WCW?s higher-ups, who put the young New Jersey native on the biggest stage they had to offer. Ford began working for the company on a regular basis, appearing on several episodes of Saturday Night and an early edition of Monday Nitro, challenging then?United States Champion Konnan.

Though he was taking to the air on national television, when the cameras were off, Ford was trying to keep his feet firmly on the ground and his nose in books. When he wasn?t wrestling, he was a full-time student at Kean University, pursuing a degree in physical therapy so he?d have something to fall back on.

?It was a unique thing,? he explained. ?I would attend school, get my work done ahead of time and fly out to TV.?

Romney is Behind When it Comes to Empathy

We're in convention season and it looks like Romney is lacking on questions of empathy. Meanwhile the two candidates are tied in North Carolina, DNC territory, while Obama holds leads in Connecticut and Iowa. Here's our guide to today's polls and why they matter. ?

RELATED: Is Medicare Helping or Hurting the Republicans?

Findings:?Whereas 54 percent of registered voters think Obama understands their problems compared to 42 percent who don't, only 41 percent of voters think Romney does compared to 50 percent who don't.?
Pollster:?CBS News
Methodology:?Telephone calls with 1,218 adults ? including 1,051 registered voters ? August 22 through 26 the margins of error for both samples +/-3 points.
Why it matters:?CBS notes that ?these numbers come days before Romney's speech at the Republican National Convention, where The New York Times has reported?the campaign is working to "overcome perceptions that Mr. Romney is stiff, aloof and distant." Meanwhile, our own Elspeth Reeve today explained how Ann Romney the task of humanizing has fell to Ann.
Caveat:?Romney still polls better than Obama when it comes to creating jobs, as Tom Kludt of Talking Points Memo notes. He's still in the red: 45 percent don't think he has a "clear plan" while 43 percent do, but he's in better shape than Obama.?

RELATED: National Polls Give Obama a Cushiony Lead

Findings:?A poll out of North Carolina shows Obama and Romney tied in North Carolina with 43 percent each among registered voters.?
Pollster:?SurveyUSA for High Point University?
Methodology:?Telephone interviews with 600 North Carolina adults of which 540 are registered August 18 through 23 with a margin of error for the presidential candidate question at +/-4.3 percent.
Why it matters:?North Carolina will play host to the Democratic National Convention next week. This poll keeps in line with the poll from the state that came out yesterday, which showed Romney and Ryan with a one point lead.?
Caveat:?The poll yesterday focused on likely voters, whereas this one focuses on registered voters. Likely voter screens?can often help the Republicans.

RELATED: Perry Now Leads in Iowa, in Part Thanks to Birthers

Findings:?Obama leads in Connecticut 52 percent to Romney's 45 percent among likely voters.
Pollster: Quinnipiac?
Methodology:?Telephone interviews with 1,472 likely voters August 22 through 26 with a margin of error of +/-2.6 percentage points.
Why it matters:?Even though that seven-point lead may look pretty wide, poll director Douglas Schwartz explains that it's a "is a far cry from his 23-point victory in 2008 over John McCain."?
Caveat:?The state isn't entirely blue. The Senate race between Republican Linda McMahon and Democrat Chris Murphy is a toss up with McMahon leading 49 percent to 46 percent.?

RELATED: Obama Up in Virginia and Wisconsin, Down in Colorado

Findings:?Obama's lead is Iowa is shrinking, now leading only 47 percent to 45 percent.
Pollster:?Public Policy Polling
Methodology: Automated poll of 1,244 likely Iowa voters August 23 through 26 with a +/-2.8 percent.?
Why it matters:?According to PPP, Iowa's a swing state where Obama had held a wider lead: in July it was at five points, in May it was at 10. Meanwhile, today Politico reports that the Romney campaign is targeting young voters in the state: it has "a full-page ad in the Iowa State Daily railing against Obama's record on youth unemployment, and Romney supporters are planning a campus rally just hours before the president is scheduled to visit Tuesday." In this poll Obama leads 50 percent to Romney's 40 percent among voters under the age of 45.?
Caveat:?PPP leans left.?

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? It was pretty much all the money Bozena Oracz had after a working life as an accountant: the equivalent of $15,000. She placed it in a fund investing in gold, with the hope of paying for her daughter's studies and getting treatment for a bad knee.

Those dreams were dashed when she discovered she had fallen victim to an elaborate fraud scheme that has left thousands of Poles, many of them elderly, facing financial ruin.

The so-called Amber Gold affair is one of the biggest financial scandals to hit Poland since the fall of communism in 1989. The extent of wrongdoing is still murky, but it seems to have some elements of a pyramid scheme, meaning the financial institution used funds from new clients to pay off older clients rather than investing them.

Consumed with anger and desperation, 58-year-old Oracz traveled last week from a small town near Warsaw to a law firm in the capital to consider whether, after losing 50,000 zlotys, she should risk another 3,000 zlotys ($920; ?730) on the fee to join a class-action lawsuit seeking to recover some of the losses.

"This was a lot of money to me ? it was my savings," Oracz said, fighting back tears. Now retired and living on a small pension, she sees no way of building another nest egg. "My pension barely covers my needs," she said.

The affair has raised questions about the effectiveness of Poland's justice system and government because authorities failed to act against the scheme despite red flags from regulators and the criminal record of its young owner. Scrutiny has also focused on the prime minister due to business dealings his son had with those running the scheme. The scandal has even touched democracy icon Lech Walesa, who fears it could tarnish his good name.

Prosecutors say investors lost about 163 million zlotys ($50 million; ?40 million), a number that has been mounting as more and more victims come forward. Any law suits could take care years to go through the courts, with no guarantee of their outcome.

"People are desperate," said Pawel Borowski, a lawyer preparing the class-action suit that Oracz is considering joining. "In most cases the clients lost life savings or sold family properties to make investments."

The financial institution, Amber Gold, promised guaranteed returns of 10 to 14 percent a year for what it claimed were investments in gold. Many of its clients were older Poles who grew up under communism and lacked the savvy to question how a financial firm could guarantee such a high return on a commodity whose value fluctuates on the international market. The promised returns compared well to the 3 to 5 percent interest offered by banks on savings accounts ? earnings essentially wiped out by the country's 4 percent inflation rate.

"These were people with a low level of financial education," said Piotr Bujak, the chief economist for Poland at Nordea Markets. "They think it's still like in the old times, where everything was guaranteed by the state. They underestimated the risk."

Amber Gold launched in 2009, opening branches in city centers alongside respected banks, with white leather sofas and other sleek touches that conveyed sophistication and respectability. It bombarded Poles with convincing advertisements. Some early investors got out with their expected gains, adding to the fund's credibility.

The company, based in Gdansk, capitalized on gold's allure while playing on people's anxieties in unpredictable financial times. "We are dealing with a loss of confidence in the entire financial system and an urgent need for safe investments," one ad said. "The environment for gold is perfect."

Amber Gold drew in 50,000 investors over its three years of operation, though the company's founder, Marcin Plichta, said there were only about 7,000 at the time of liquidation.

Soon after Amber Gold began operations, the Polish Financial Supervision Authority put it on a "black list" of institutions that operate like banks without authorization. There are 17 other such black-listed institutions in operation, but the regulators lack the authority to shut them down. This has sparked a debate in the government and news media about whether courts should be more aggressive in intervening.

According to prosecutors, the company did use some of its money to invest in at least one legitimate business: It was the main investor in budget airline OLT Express. It was this investment that brought Amber Gold down ? when the airline filed for bankruptcy, Amber Gold entered liquidation and its scheme of investments unraveled. Its bank accounts were blocked and it was unable to return the money of thousands of its customers.

Plichta was charged this month with six counts of criminal misconduct.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk's center-right government went into damage-control mode when it emerged that the leader's son, Michal Tusk, had done PR work for the airline. Tusk said he had warned his son against doing business with Plichta but that ultimately he son makes his own decisions.

Leszek Miller, the head of the opposition Democratic Left Alliance, asked how Tusk could warn his son against involvement in the airline but not warn the thousands of Poles who invested in the fund. Miller has called for a parliamentary inquiry into the scandal.

Public discontent is also centering on the justice system because Plichta, 28, has past convictions for fraud, and many Poles are asking why authorities ? aware of his criminal record ? didn't stop him sooner. Born Marcin Stefanski, he took his wife's last name to distance himself from his past crimes.

The country's top prosecutor, Andrzej Seremet, admitted Monday that prosecutors were negligent in failing to heed multiple warnings since 2009 about Amber Gold from the financial supervisory body. He announced personnel changes in the office he blamed for mistakes.

The affair also has an unlikely connection to the Solidarity leader and former president, Lech Walesa, because an Oscar-winning director, Andrzej Wajda, was relying on money from Amber Gold to produce a film about Walesa's struggle in the 1980s.

Walesa came out publicly to make clear he is not involved in any way, saying he doesn't want his name "dirtied."

Many of the unlucky investors are not only furious but wracked by shame and guilt.

Engineer Andrzej Malinowski, 61, put three months of salary ? 25,000 zlotys ($7,660; ?6,100) ? into Amber Gold. He made the investment without consulting with his wife, sensing that there was some risk and that she would not have agreed.

Now he is so shaken and embarrassed that he doesn't want to talk about it, leaving his wife, Danuta Malinowska, to help unravel the mess.

"He saw that gold was going higher and higher so he believed that maybe it would be a good deal," Malinowska said. "Now he has so much guilt that I am trying to help ? contacting the lawyer, filling in the forms, writing to the prosecutors. But the justice system is very ineffective. I don't believe we will be getting any of this money back."

Why food processor is a must have for every kitchen?

With changing life style and busy time schedule, cooking requires great innovation and huge prospects of involving technologies in the kitchen. One such technological invention is food processor which has proved to be indispensable in every kitchen with change in time.

? Food processor is a very convenient and handy machine .It not only reduces human effort but also takes away all hassle of preparation out of human hands. It does for its consumers everything except cooking.

? The great benefit of having a food processor is that it peels, chops and dices vegetables efficiently, smoothly and very fast

? Another benefit of having a food processor is it makes blending and pureeing so much easier and fast. With its use one can prepare pickles and sauces easily at home. Chopping finely ingredients for pickles like cucumber, onions etc. are no longer a hazard to your fingers.

? One benefit of having a food processor will quickly become apparent in your declining grocery bills as one can now make dips, spreads, salsa and mayonnaise easily and quickly at home. And they will be far healthier as they have no artificial flavour or preservatives in them.

? Perhaps the most well known benefit of having a food processor lies in the ease with which it can make soups, sauces and purees. This simply cannot be done so well by hand.

? Whether you are making chutney or grinding spices in small amount for some dish, you can do it easily and evenly in the small bowl attachment which comes with the food processor.

? Another benefit of having a food processor is that you can serve freshly squeezed fruit juice to your family for breakfast.

? Making a casserole? Put the chunk of cheese in the food processor to grate it evenly down to the smallest bits.

? One benefit of having a food processor is that shredding of leafy vegetables like lettuce; cabbage and spinach are no longer such a challenge.

? If you like to make pizza or pasta, kneading of dough has been rendered much easier by the plastic kneading blade that comes with all food processors. You can put in all the ingredients and the dough comes out ready to be put into the oven.

? Other benefits of having a food processor include the ease with which you can make things like bread crumbs, cookie crumbs, nut butters etc.

? When purchasing a food processor, consider the types and amounts of food you will be processing. If you intend to knead heavy or stiff bread dough, or crush ice often, you will need a processor with a heavy-duty motor.

? Food processors are actually easy-to-use appliances.

? Food processors are easy to clean, if you follow these tips. To clean the metal blade or metal disks, it is best to wash them carefully by hand. A few trips through the dishwasher can dull their sharp cutting edges. For easy cleanup of sticky foods, such as cheese, spray the blade or shredding disk with non-stick cooking spray before using.

? The food processor is really helpful in many ways and you can keep yourself free from the hassles of long hours of cooking. If you think that you need some extra force to push the food that gets stuck into the processor, and then use the plastic pusher. Once you are properly acquainted with the working system of the processor, you will know how to use it to make your cooking really easy.

Auto loan delinquency rates fall to lowest in history

Auto loan delinquency rates fall to lowest in history

?July 2012 Auto Sales by the Numbers

?

One indicator of the status of our economy is the rate at which car owners are able to make payments, or rather, aren't. The rate at which owners can't get the check in the mail for their new car is called the delinquency rate, and according to a Los Angeles Times report, it has fallen to an all-time low.

Credit report entity TransUnion began tracking this data in 1999, which it calculates as the percentage of borrowers 60 or more days past due. Currently that rate was recorded at 0.33% for the second quarter of 2012 ? down from 0.36% in the first quarter and a full 25% lower than last year.

Auto sales in the U.S. have risen 14% in the first seven months of 2012 to 8.4 million vehicles. Experts suggest this is a result of more relaxed credit conditions, allowing buyers with poorer credit to find a way to purchase a new car. This trend could eventually result in the delinquency rate climbing back up.

"We are at such a low delinquency level" said Peter Tureck, automotive vice president for TransUnion's financial services business wing, "that a slight rise through the end of the year should be expected, though the overall rate will remain relatively low."

Which states have the highest delinquency rates in the country right now? That would be Louisiana, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, all of which are within the 0.55% to 0.60% area.

NYT: These days, it's back to school, then shopping

Samantha Paradise is starting eighth grade in Manhattan next week, but she won?t be decked out in all new gear on the first day.

At 13, Samantha doesn?t want to be stuck with untrendy items, so she will wait to see if the Superga sneakers that were cool at summer camp are still in fashion, and whether her classmates choose JanSport backpacks or revive the Longchamp and LeSportsac bags from last year. ?I don?t want to be the only one wearing a different kind of backpack,? she said.

In a shift that is upending retailers? plans, many children, teenagers and their parents are delaying their school purchases. A desire to get the trends right accounts for some of the hesitation. But retailers and analysts say the sluggish economy and unusually hot weather have also made for a surprisingly slow start to the back-to-school spending season, one that was expected to be the strongest since before the recession.

If people do not go to stores once schools start, it will be bad news for an economy heavily dependent on consumer spending to stay afloat. And the postponed spending is complicating how stores stock, promote and sell their back-to-school items, some of which have been on the shelves for almost two months.

Charles M. Holley Jr., chief financial officer of Wal-Mart, said stores were seeing customers ?wait until school starts, and they don?t buy things until they absolutely have to.? Office Depot?s head of retail, Juan Guerrero, said many shoppers were even holding off on buying staples like pens and notebooks.

?People are waiting for deals to occur,? Mr. Guerrero said.

The consequences could be serious if sales do not rebound. The back-to-school season is the second-largest sales period for retailers, after the winter holiday period, and it offers a spate of new designs and a firm reason for shoppers to head to stores. Beyond the profits retailers make from back-to-school sales, what is popular and what is not provides an important barometer as they prepare for the holidays.

This month, when the National Retail Federation surveyed consumers with school-age children, less than 8 percent had completed their back-to-school shopping, the lowest figure in four years. More than a quarter of respondents said they had not done any shopping, and by that point, school had already started in cities from Georgia to Arizona.

Retailers trying to cope
J. C. Penney is trying to cope by adding styles that will go on the racks in early September. Adrienne Tennant, an analyst with Janney Capital Markets, said Abercrombie & Fitch, Old Navy and American Eagle Outfitters had extended sales to attract later shoppers. Looking to next year, the teenage store Hot Topic is rethinking its back-to-school timing.

?The post-back-to-school numbers are up, and the pre-back-to-school numbers are down a little bit,? said Lisa Harper, chief executive of Hot Topic. ?Next year, we?ll probably delay.?

Liz Sweney, J. C. Penney?s chief merchant, said that while the back-to-school season had been slipping into late August and early September for a couple of years, the trend was more pronounced this year.

?A few weeks into school, a couple things happen,? she said. ?Weather happens ? it gets cooler ? and kids obviously see what their friends are wearing, particularly for teens, and then they go back to the stores.?

J. C. Penney has been running a free-haircut promotion since the beginning of August to attract early shoppers, but it is also stocking up for later shoppers. Ms. Sweney said the retailer had ordered a wider selection of merchandise to arrive in early September than it did last year. And as the fall goes on, it will emphasize layering pieces, like hoodies and varsity-style jackets, that students can add to what they have already purchased.

But not all retailers have been as nimble.

John D. Morris, an analyst with BMO Capital Markets, said the too-early arrival of wintry gear at Abercrombie & Fitch was among the reasons the company performed poorly in the quarter that ended July 28, with sales at stores open for at least a year falling 10 percent.

?Abercrombie in July was flowing in heavier-weight goods ? down vests when it?s 95 degrees out, sweaters, outerwear, jackets,? Mr. Morris said.

Ms. Tennant, the Janney analyst, said retailers that extended their August sales were most likely reacting to a slower start to August than they expected.

Later start dates
Later school start dates are one possible explanation. Mr. Guerrero of Office Depot and Ms. Harper of Hot Topic said that a number of school districts near where they had stores were starting later this year than last.

But students may also be waiting to shop this year in part because trends are so definite that there is little room for error, Ms. Tennant said. (No one wants to show up in high-top sneakers and a chartreuse sweatshirt on the first day of school when everyone else has left the ?80s trend behind.)

Older students, especially, seem to be waiting until after Labor Day, most likely so they can see what their friends are wearing, said Cathy Beaudoin, president of fashion for Amazon.

Ms. Tennant and Mr. Morris said colored jeans (which became ubiquitous in the spring but are still selling well), printed denim, pleated skirts and dots and floral patterns were currently popular among teenagers.

?Especially when you have a momentous change in fashion,? Ms. Tennant said, ?with young girls, when you?re going into a big trend season, the early adopters will certainly be there, but the fashion followers will buy some stuff to start themselves off with, but go back to school and make sure they got the right color, the right fit and the right trend.?

Samantha Paradise, the Manhattan eighth grader, said that while she liked a lot of the trends she had seen in magazines and online, that was not enough to get her into stores before classes started.

?I?m looking to wait,? she said.

How Ann Romney learned to stop worrying and love politics

TAMPA--When the three major news networks announced last week that they would not air Ann Romney's Republican National Convention Monday night speech in Tampa, Republicans started scrambling. Romney's likeable wife of 43 years needed a primetime spot, they decided, and party leaders were reportedly ready to bump the popular Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to make that happen. Eventually, they moved New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez's appearance to another night so that Ann could steal the spotlight on Tuesday. Meanwhile, party officials denied they had ever considered dumping Rubio.

This last minute jockeying is a testament to just how vital the campaign considers Ann to her husband's election efforts, something that wasn't always the case over the course of Romney's political career. Back in 1994, during Romney's failed U.S. Senate bid (and first run for office), the new political spouse on the block was a gaffe-prone potential liability without the polish or PR skills to handle the press. But over the years, Ann has learned how to spin family tales into political catnip--wooing voters by offering a dimension to her husband that no one else has seen before?and becoming a smooth and competent politician in her own right.

The 63-year-old mother of five and grandmother to 16 has emerged as an important humanizing force for Romney on the campaign trail. While the presumptive Republican nominee can come across as stiff and awkward on the stump, Ann charms the crowd with personal stories, casting her husband in a softer light. At a rally in Michigan on Friday she choked up while expressing gratitude that so many supporters in her home state had shown up. "Mitt and I grew up here, we fell in love here, and this is a special place for us," she said.

Despite her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis, which she was diagnosed with in 1998, Ann has attended hundreds of campaign events and often comes across as having more energy on the stump than her husband. She was at her husband's side at virtually every rally during the long primary?working the rope line alongside her spouse and often delivering a mini stump speech of her own.

In one instance, she tells the story of being a stay-at-home mom in charge of five "very naughty" sons when her husband, then a consultant with Bain Capital, was traveling. "He would call home, and he'd hear a very exasperated wife at the end of the phone," Ann said during a rally in South Carolina in January. "And he'd remind me to hang in there. It would be okay, that actually my job was more important than his job. And the cool thing was he meant it."

"You couldn't pay me to do this again"

Ann now seems so skilled and smooth in interviews it's hard to believe that she is actually something of a comeback kid, politically speaking.

During her husband's unsuccessful bid for a Massachusetts Senate seat, the Boston Globe blasted her in a scorched-earth profile that portrayed her as a chatty, over-privileged woman living a life so perfect it bordered on creepy. The two lines from the interview that most haunted the campaign: Ann's insistence that she and her Ken-doll-looking husband had never once had a fight during their marriage; and her statement that the couple was "struggling" when Mitt was getting his graduate degrees at Harvard. The two were supporting themselves by selling off American Motors stock given to Mitt by his wealthy father?something that didn't exactly resonate with voters working two jobs to survive. ("Mitt was still in school and we had no income except the stock we were chipping away at. We were living on the edge, not entertaining. No, I did not work. Mitt thought it was important for me to stay home with the children, and I was delighted," she said at the time.)

In an article titled "Daughter of Privilege Knows Little of Real World," the Boston Herald ripped off the most unflattering of the Globe's quotes. The experience left Ann incredibly angry, she later admitted. When a reporter asked her after her husband's defeat whether she would ever help him launch another race, she retorted: "Never. You couldn't pay me to do this again."

Writer Ron Scott, a Mormon who wrote MITT ROMNEY: An Inside Look at the Man and His Politics and who lived in the same stake?sort of the Mormon version of a diocese?as the Romneys, said he remembers "gasping" when he first read the Globe profile, instantly recognizing it as a disaster. But now, Scott thinks the incident just shows how fully Romney trusted his wife?for good or for bad. Despite her political inexperience, her husband was willing to let Ann do an hour-long one-on-one interview without media training or a PR team to hold her hand. And Ann was happy to take that risk, confident she could come out on top.

Perhaps that assurance was misplaced at the time, but it seems fitting now.

"She looks...like she's enjoying the campaign," Scott said. "I think if you were to contrast between now and '94, I don't think she really enjoyed that campaign or the 2008 one, but this time around I think she really looks like she's come alive."

The happy homemaker

Romney often introduces Ann as his "sweetheart" on the trail. The two began dating when she was 16 and he 18 in the ritzy Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Hills. Ann's father, an immigrant from Wales, had made his fortune and served as the town's mayor. Romney, the son of Michigan Gov. George Romney, "hotly pursued" her, she said later. After a year at Stanford and two years of a Mormon mission in France, Romney rushed home and proposed to Ann, who had converted to Mormonism under Gov. Romney's tutelage and was attending Brigham Young University in Utah.

Ann eventually finished her undergraduate degree in French in 1975, when she already had two children. She recalled in an interview with People magazine that she shocked a professor at Harvard's extension school--where she took some classes at night while Mitt attended grad school--for needing to nurse one of her children in the back of the lecture hall. "It's one of those things where the professor is like, 'Wait, wait, wait, this is liberal Harvard, but what am I going to do about that woman in the back with a baby that's nursing?' He just kept pretending like I wasn't there," she recalled. Though she saw the Beatles perform live in Detroit and was a child of the 60s, Ann was a bit of rebel in reverse for wanting to settle down and have children instead of pursuing a career. She's said she felt judged sometimes by peers, but never regretted her decision.

During the campaign in April, she used a Democratic strategist's attack on her for never "working a day in her life" to portray Democrats as judgmental and dismissive of mothers, a powerful counterattack to the Democratic argument that Republicans were waging a "war on women." The comments sent Democrats into a tailspin, with no less than President Barack Obama himself going on TV to say, "There's no tougher job than being a mom" within a day of the comments. Ann later called the attack "an early birthday gift" in comments that were captured by a hot mic, inadvertently showing off her tough-as-nails political instincts.

Team Romney

When speaking about Romney's bid, Ann frequently uses the "we" or the "Mitt and I" construction, emphasizing just how invested in the campaign she actually is. She's not just selling Mitt on the stump--she's selling them both as a team.

"Mitt and I are in an unusual position right now to make a difference to the future of this nation," she told a rally in West Charleston, S.C., in January.

Then, two weeks ago, she said to NBC: "I don't think he could do it without me. I don't believe he could."

Her willingness to take on the mantle of surrogate is somewhat surprising for a woman who has often aired her misgivings about opening up her private life and whom the Boston Globe described as largely "invisible" in Massachusetts as first lady when her husband was governor. Even now, when traveling on her own, Ann rarely tells people she meets on planes her true identity; she prefers to say vaguely that she works in public relations.

Technically, she's not lying. During the primaries, when Romney had a tense relationship with his traveling press corps, Ann would venture back on the candidate's plane to chat with reporters?offering up a friendlier face to the pack of wolves press than her hunted husband.

After a disastrous event in South Carolina when Romney was photographed with one of the smallest crowds he's ever attracted on the trail, Ann wandered off the bus and stood with reporters awaiting a gaggle with the candidate.

"What kind of jeans are you wearing?" she jokingly shouted, as her husband took the mic?a reference to a brief media obsession over whether the candidate was sporting "skinny" jeans on the campaign trail. Her husband grinned.

On the campaign plane, Ann always shares a row with her husband. He reads his iPad, while she's been spotted flipping through issues of US Weekly. He has said her presence keeps him calm. "If I'm away from Ann for longer than a week or so, I get off course," Romney told CNN's Piers Morgan. "She has to bring me back and moderate me down a bit."

But Ann's sunny disposition has faltered as negative attacks on her family's wealth and character intensified over the summer. While she's continued to be one of her husband's strongest assets on the stage, Ann has largely ceased her plane-side chats with reporters trailing her husband across the country.

Advisers who declined to be named discussing the candidate's wife said Ann was deeply wounded by the British tabloid attacks in July over her husband's comments suggesting he found London's Olympic preparations "disconcerting." (The Sun tabloid called him "Mitt the Twit" in retaliation, and the gaffe threatened to overshadow Romney's foreign tour.)

More recently, her hackles have been up over demands that her husband release more years of his tax returns. Ann was noticeably agitated in an interview with NBC's Natalie Morales two weeks ago when asked about the financial disclosures.

"Have you seen how we are attacked? Have you seen what's happened?" she said, leaning forward in her chair. "We have been very transparent to what's legally required of us. But the more we release, the more we get attacked, the more we get questioned, the more we get pushed. And so we have done what's legally required, and there's going to be no more tax releases given."

Besides fighting back in interviews, Ann has grown more aggressive on the stump as well. The announcement of Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wisc) as Romney's running mate has breathed new life into the campaign, drawing larger crowds to Romney's events. Joining her husband and Ryan on stage at a rally in Mooresville, N.C., earlier this month, she marveled at the size of the crowd that had turned out, which was estimated to be at least 4,000 people.

"They know America is in trouble and these are the guys who are going to save it," she said. "It's a boost that gives us determination to say we're not going to take it anymore! We're going to take the White House back!"

--Holly Bailey contributed to this report from the campaign trail.
