Jelly Bean captures top spot in Google Android adoption figures

Jelly Bean gains at expense of all other versions, including ICS

Google's latest Android marketshare numbers have been revealed with "Jelly Bean" at 34.1percent finally taking the crown from incumbent "Gingerbread" holding 37.9 percent of the user base. The Jelly Bean gains come at the expense of all the other versions of Android, including the relatively recent "Ice Cream Sandwich" Android 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 versions.

Beginning in April, 2013, the Google-created charts are built using data collected from each device when the user visits the Google Play Store. Previously, the data was collected when the device simply checked-in to Google servers for any reason. The search engine believes the new data gathering method more accurately reflects those users who are most engaged in the Android and Google Play ecosystem. While perhaps not the most accurate method of tracking, the new methodology does assist developers in tailoring apps to the most likely users.

Android 4.1 and 4.2 (both Jelly Bean) posted gains. Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) has dropped 2.3 percentage points to 23.3 percent. Gingerbread comes in second, with Ice Cream Sandwich is third.
